Starting to save at 25 or 35: the cost of waiting, in rupees

This isn't advice on where to put money. It's only the maths of time: what ten years of waiting does to your own plan, with the same end date.

Facts last checked: October 2026

Why early months count most

Money put in early has the longest time to grow. If you start ten years later and stop at the same age, the late plan simply has fewer years to grow. The gap at the end is what waiting cost. SEBI investor calculator (2024)

Nobody knows the future

India's Nifty 50 index, with dividends, grew about 12.5% a year since 1999. But any 10-year stretch could land anywhere from about 6% to 23% a year. That's why the calculator shows a low, middle and high path. The past is never a promise. Nifty 50 history (Bajaj AMC, Basunivesh) (2025)

Seeing your future self helps

In one study, people who saw an aged picture of themselves chose to save more for later. Picturing the person you'll be makes their needs feel real. Hershfield et al. (2011)

When will you do it?

How we worked this out
  1. Your plan: ₹5,000 a month, going up 10% each year, for 30 years.
  2. Started on time, it ends at ₹78.9 lakh in today's money, after tax.
  3. Started 120 months late, with the same end date, it ends at ₹19.1 lakh.
  4. ₹78.9 lakh minus ₹19.1 lakh = ₹59.7 lakh.
  5. On the lower path (8% a year) the gap is ₹37 lakh. On the higher path (13% a year) it's ₹85.4 lakh.
  6. Today's money: we divide by 1.05 for each of the 30 years, because prices go up about 5% a year.
  7. Tax: 12.5% on gains above ₹1.25 lakh, taken once at the end.
  8. To end at the same place despite the late start, the plan would need ₹20,971 a month instead of ₹5,000.
  9. How much it matters to you: 7 out of 10. It only changes the order on your statement.

Fixed figures

  • Tax on gains above ₹1.25 lakh, as for equity funds: 12.5%
  • Money goes in at the start of each month: start of month
