Your IELTS or GRE score is expiring: what it means for your plans

A test score feels done once you have it. But it has an end date, and if it runs out before you apply, you sit the test again.

Facts last checked: October 2026

How long scores last

IELTS, TOEFL and PTE scores are valid for two years. GRE and GMAT scores last five years. Stanford GSB admissions (2026); Baylor University Graduate School (2026)

Two years goes fast when you're also saving money, getting papers ready and choosing where to go.

The date that counts is your deadline

Some schools, like Stanford's business school, say your score must still be valid on the deadline you apply by, not on the day you start. So the real question is whether your score lasts until your deadline. Stanford GSB admissions (2026)

Each school and visa office sets its own rules, so check the official page for yours.

Your IELTS score has about 1 year and 2 months left

Most universities and visa offices accept IELTS scores for 2 years. Some count to their own deadline, not the day you apply, so your real window can be shorter.

When will you do it?

How we worked this out
  1. IELTS scores usually last 2 years: 24 months.
  2. Left: 24 minus 10 months = 14 months.
  3. Each university or visa office sets its own rule. Check their page.
  4. How much it matters to you: 7 out of 10. It only changes the order on your statement.
